If your BS6 truck, bus or tractor suddenly shows an AdBlue or SCR warning, or loses power for no clear reason, a faulty urea doser could be the cause. This small part has a big job: it sprays AdBlue into the exhaust so harmful NOx is converted into harmless nitrogen and water.
At Turbo Tech Engineers, we have supplied diesel engine components from New Delhi and Amritsar since 1996. In this guide we explain what a urea doser does, how to spot failure early, what causes it, and how to fix it without wasting money.
What Is a Urea Doser?
A urea doser (also called an AdBlue injector or DEF doser) is part of the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. AdBlue is a mix of 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionised water. The doser meters a fine spray of this fluid into the hot exhaust stream. Together with the NOx sensor, AdBlue pump and ECU, it keeps your vehicle BS6 compliant.
How the SCR System Works
The AdBlue tank stores the fluid.
The AdBlue pump sends it under pressure to the doser.
The doser sprays it into the exhaust before the SCR catalyst.
The NOx sensors check the result, and the ECU adjusts dosing.
If any link fails, the ECU raises a warning. A faulty NOx sensor can look like a doser problem, so read our guide on NOx sensors and emission compliance.
7 Symptoms of Urea Doser Failure
AdBlue / SCR warning light on the dashboard, even with a full tank.
Power loss or limp mode, where the ECU limits engine power.
White crystal deposits around the doser or exhaust pipe.
High AdBlue consumption, or almost none being used.
Failed emission test or high NOx readings.
Fault codes for dosing under-delivery, a blocked injector or a leaking doser.
Speed or restart restrictions after repeated warnings.
A faulty NOx sensor, dosing pump or injector can also trigger an SCR warning with a full tank, so a proper scan is needed before replacing anything.
Common Causes of Urea Doser Problems
1. Urea crystallisation. The doser works at high temperature and pressure. Over time AdBlue can crystallise, causing blockages and small leaks. Short trips and low exhaust temperatures make this worse.
2. Poor-quality or contaminated AdBlue. Blocked dosing nozzles are mostly caused by poor-quality AdBlue or debris in the tank. Always use branded, ISO 22241-certified AdBlue and keep the filler cap and nozzle clean.
3. Old or badly stored AdBlue. Fluid kept in heat or direct sun degrades. Avoid stocking it for many months.
4. Cross-contamination. Putting diesel, water or tap water in the AdBlue tank can damage the entire system.
5. Skipped servicing. The AdBlue filter and lines need periodic replacement as per your vehicle's service manual.
6. Sensor, pump or wiring faults. Sometimes the doser is fine and the real fault is elsewhere in the SCR system.
What To Do If You See an AdBlue Warning
Don't ignore it. Many trucks give progressive warnings and eventually restrict speed or power.
Check the AdBlue level and the quality of the fluid.
Get a diagnostic scan to read the exact fault code.
Inspect the doser for crystals, leaks and a damaged spray tip.
Clean or replace the doser based on the diagnosis, not guesswork.
Light crystal buildup can sometimes be cleaned by a trained technician, but a clogged, cracked or leaking doser should be replaced.
Genuine vs Aftermarket Urea Dosers
A cheap doser that fails in three months costs more than a quality one. Check the part number, vehicle application, spray specification and the supplier's warranty. For a deeper look, read Genuine vs Aftermarket Diesel Parts: What Actually Matters.
How To Prevent Urea Doser Failure
Use only quality AdBlue from a trusted source
Keep the tank filler and nozzle clean
Don't let the tank run completely empty
Service the AdBlue filter and pump on schedule
Fix small leaks and warnings early
Avoid long idling and constant short-distance driving where possible

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive with a faulty urea doser?
For a short time, yes, but the ECU will usually reduce power or restrict speed, and you risk failing emission rules. Get it checked quickly.
How do I know if the doser or the NOx sensor is faulty?
Only a diagnostic scan and physical inspection can confirm. Both can trigger similar warnings.
Can a blocked urea doser be cleaned?
Light deposits can sometimes be cleaned by a trained technician. Heavy crystallisation or a damaged doser should be replaced.
How much AdBlue does a truck use?
For many heavy trucks, AdBlue consumption is roughly 3–7% of diesel consumption.
Do you supply urea dosers for Cummins and other brands?
Yes. Send us your vehicle and part details on WhatsApp and we will confirm availability.
